Fort Rock Cave Tour

Tour length:  Approx. 2 hours.

Minimum age:  Tour is not recommended for children under 6 years old.

Description:  The Fort Rock Basin has served as a vital part of the Native American lifestyle. Fort Rock Cave is near Fort Rock State Natural Area and is the site of an archaeological discovery of several 9,000 to 11,000-year-old sagebrush bark sandals. This property serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage that has shaped so much of Oregon's history. Fort Rock Cave is a National Heritage site and is open only by a state park guided tour.

Tour Info:  Tours are $10.00 per person.  Tours begin at the parking lot at Fort Rock State Natural Area. Please plan to arrive about 15 minutes prior to tour start time.  All tour participants are transported in a van to an area near the cave, then hike about 1/3 mile each way on a dirt road to and from the cave site.

Be Prepared:  The terrain is sandy soil and rocks--sandals and open toed shoes are not recommended.  Pets are not permitted on tours and it is not recommended they be left in vehicles--please do not bring pets.  There are no facilities or water available after the van departs the parking lot, so bring plenty of water.  Be prepared for any weather as conditions can change quickly.  The temperature in the cave is typically 10-15 degrees lower than the outside temperature.
