Ring in 2026 surrounded by the stunning cliffs and canyons of Smith Rock State Park!
Join us for our First Day Hike and experience the beauty and geology of Oregon’s high desert. Discover how plants, animals, and people have adapted to thrive in this dramatic landscape of rock and sky.
When: Thursday, January 1, 2026, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Staff will arrive 10 minutes early and depart 5 minutes after the posted start time.
Where: Meet in the Day Use Lawn adjacent to the restroom and Welcome Center.
What: Enjoy a 1-mile round trip walk along the Rim Rock Trail, which provides spectacular views of the park from the canyon ridge over easy terrain with no elevation gain.
Conditions: Expect cold, winter weather with the possibility of ice/snow.
Bring: Water, weather-appropriate clothing, and sturdy walking shoes.
Restrictions: All pets must remain on a physical leash at all times. No drones allowed for the raptor nesting season.
Come prepared for stunning views of the park, information about Smith Rock's unique geology, wildlife, and history, and great photo opportunities!
