Smith Rock First Day Hike

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED! Join Smith Rock rangers as they lead a hike through the park to highlight the unique wonders that make up Smith Rock and the surrounding ecosystem. You will learn about the geology (how DID these rock formations get here, anyway?), animals and plants that make this park truly special. This is a great opportunity to get a first-hand look at the incredible scenic views and possibly see wildlife and maybe even some rock climbers in action!

This is a 1.5 mile round trip hike along the Crooked River and rim rock. There is one section of steep descent into the canyon, and of course the steep descent back up. The hiking trail is gravel, but could be slick in several places, so do keep an eye on the weather forecast, as it may be necessary to bring and wear traction devices if there is snow or ice. In any case, it’s best to wear heavy closed-toe shoes/boots with good soles. The first half of the route is not accessible, however the Rim Rock section is accessible. Please call the park if you have questions or concerns at 541-548-7501.

Parking fees will be waived on this first day of the year, but any pets accompanying you must be on a leash no longer than a 6’ at all times within park boundaries, and no drones are allowed during the raptor nesting season.

Meet the ranger at 9AM at the Welcome Center Yurt by the day-use restrooms. Bring water, snacks and any cold weather clothing and gear that will help you feel more comfortable. We suggest a backpack and layers.
